Tax Code is issued by HMRC (HM Revenue and Customs), to the persons who pays taxes. The tax code is a number followed by a letter or a letter followed by number, which determines the amount which is tax free. The tax code is reviewed annually to check if there is any change in the person’s income.

The tax code is used by the person when he fills some tax related forms. The tax code is used in many forms or documents that are official whether the person runs a small business or a business empire. The tax code plays a very important role for your tax and deductions. It also tells your employer that how much tax has to be deducted from the wages.

Sometimes, the person makes some errors while filling some forms for taxes or other documents. This error in filling the tax code can lead to adverse effect. Also when applied for a tax code to the tax office you may receive the wrong tax code by mistake. This has to be checked very carefully and if any problem is there the person should immediately inform the tax office for correction. The tax code is the only thing which will identify the deduction and the tax that you have to pay. You are entitled to pay the right amount of tax, but this is the responsibility of the tax payer. He/she should check the tax code before giving it to the employer and also make sure that the tax code used by the employer is correct.

Using the wrong tax code will make you pay high amount of taxes or very little taxes because of lots of deductions. But which is not correct according to your income in either case. Most of the people who are in risk for getting the incorrect tax code are:

- The person who has more than one job.
- A person who has a pension and also a job.
- A person who entitles for taxable benefit (like incapacity benefit) and also work.

So it is the duty of every individual to check whether the tax code is correct or not. If it is so than the individual should immediately inform the tax office for correction. Getting the tax code correct can save you from hassle and from paying higher taxes also.
