You have to be careful with the term “Accountant” as they are not like solicitors and doctors. In UK anyone can be an accountant whether he/she is qualified or not. But according to the new rules under the new Money Laundering Regulations (MLRs) that came in December 2007, the providers for the accounting services need to have supervision by the professional body to carry out the trading. If they are not attached or supervised by the professional body they need to be registered with the HMRC.
Due to this the unregulated accounting service providers (which according to the IFA are approx. 35000 - 40000) have to be registered with the taxman or they will not be able to do business from 1, October 2008. Continue reading…
