If a person had not paid his/her taxes for longer period say a year or so than he/she might be worried about the consequences. You may also be worried that if you try to correct the problem than and pay all the dues than you might get into trouble because of the missed payments. As for this reason some people avoid to pay the taxes year after year and which will lead to a more serious problem as the year passes.
It should be kept in mind that if these non-payments are discovered by some other means than you will be in very big problem rather than if you tell the IRS yourself. If you accept your mistake than they are chances that the IRS will allow you to correct the problem with some penalty only if it was non-intentional.
Some of the steps you can take to get those unpaid taxes paid are as follows:
1) Contact the IRS:
The first thing that you need to do is that you have to tell the IRS about how many years of taxes you owe. Contact them and tell that you want to fix the problems. Once this is done, you would be working towards solving the problems in a much easier way.
2) Find the amount that you owe:
Once you have contacted the IRS the next step to find out the amount that you owe for these years. This would be difficult but you can take help from IRS if they have any records for the missed year or you can calculate the amounts if you know your income for the years you skipped.
3) Make sure your taxes are in order:
Now you know your income and most likely you would know that tax amount that you owe, but it should also be kept in mind that you must deduct the necessary deductions for those years which were applicable. This will reduce the amount of tax that you owe and help you.
4) Its Time to file your tax:
When you have done all the calculations of your taxes along with the filling of the form, it has to be filed. For the simplicity of the whole procedure you can hire accountant which will guide you through the whole process and help you. Once you have files the tax than you will be able to know about the amount that you owe.
5) Pay the Owed amount:
Final thing is to pay the taxes. Preferably it is best to send the payment with tax return but for some people this may not be possible. For this the person can talk to the IRS about the payment plan or the installment plan.
